Croyde comes alive for The Saltrock Open
Congratulations to Women’s Open Champion Sarah Beardmore
The Saltrock Open is well underway, and Croyde has started to show what it can do.
After a very optimistic build up, both swell and weather conditions were disappointing on Saturday, so everyone was chuffed to wake up Sunday morning to decent waves and even some patchy sunshine. The decision was quickly made to run the competition over three days as it has in previous years, Men’s Open Final taking place on Bank Holiday Monday.
However, Sunday saw some fantastic finals in the other divisions in challenging 4/5 ft sets. Huge congratulations go to Sarah Beardmore who was crowned Women’s Champion for the 2nd year in a row, beating unlucky birthday girl Gwen Spurlock into 2nd place. There were strong performances too from 3rd and 4th placed finalists Beth Mason and Celine Gehret, but Sarah was thrilled to retain her crown.
Raine Jackson won the King of Watersports Highest Scoring Wave for women with a fantastic score of 8.5 and received a £200 skateboard.
Louis Eyre took the Pro Junior title, continuing a rich vein of form following a 5th place in the European Junior Championships. Louis, originally from Manchester, beat a strong final field of Angelo Bonomelli, Jobe Harris and Josh Piper into 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.
St Ives had a great day in the junior divisions. St Ives surfer Tassy Swallow took the U16 Girls title, beating last year’s winner Laura Crane into 2nd place, and Harry de Roth, the UKPSA 2009 U12 Champion and also from St Ives took 1st place in the U12 division.
And last but not least, Luke Dillon from Newquay triumphed in a hotly contested U16 Boys final, beating Miles Lee Hargreaves, Joss Brooks and Liam Turner into 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.
So all eyes turn to Monday afternoon for the Men’s Open Final, and with Croyde’s infamous low tide falling in mid afternoon we could well be in for a cracking show. Saltrock’s Ross Thomson will present all the winners awards after the finals on Monday.
And remember, if you haven’t made it to Croyde this weekend check out the UKPSA website for the highlights courtesy of Saltbox.tv.
