Fistral Beach in Newquay, no stranger to huge powerful waves, will be the scene of one of the country's largest surfing competitions, as over 150 students abandon the classroom and take to the waves to battle against each other for the title of ‘Cornish Schools’ Surf Champion 2014’.

The event, now in its 10th year, is organised by the students of Treviglas’ Post-16 Surf Academy.  To be held on Saturday 17th May, this year’s event will be held in conjunction with the UK Pro Tour and, for the first time ever, will contribute towards both British and English Junior Team selection.

Ellis Attwell, Leader of Learning for the Surf Academy, said: “As part of Treviglas Surf Academy’s 10 year anniversary, we are delighted that we have raised the profile of the event even further by teaming up with the UK Pro Tour. Already we have had significant interest from competitors from Wales and Scotland, not to mention England. This event will feature real-time heat updates, in water video footage posted to social media, a celebration party on the Saturday night and of course a very high standard of surfing.”

Dave Reed, Director of the UK Pro Surf Association, commented: “It’s fantastic news that the Cornish Schools’ will now be part of the UK Pro Surf Tour 2014, including five divisions: Under 16 Boys, Under 16 Girls, Under 14 Boys, Under 14 Girls and for the first time Under 12 Open. The events will be open to all surfers and will be essential for competitors to attend if they wish to challenge for these UK Pro Surf Tour titles.”

Ellis continued: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the UK Pro Tour and Surfing GB for their commitment to grassroots level surfing in this country. Without their help this event would not be possible.”

The Surf Academy at Treviglas is unique in being the only surfing based post-16 course in the country. Organising The Cornish Schools’ Surfing Championships, undertaking 'A' levels in Business, Enterprise, Sport and Tourism, completing University modules and gaining practical qualifications such as lifeguard and Surfing GB surf coaching awards are all achieved by the students.  Many students are eligible for financial assistance towards accommodation and travel expenses due to the unique nature of the course. They graduate after two years with career paths typically split between the option of University or a successful career in the leisure industry.

Dave Reed added: “I would like to congratulate Ellis and all his staff for supporting surfing over the last ten years, providing an opportunity for students to be educated in surf related programmes leading to future employment in associated industries or onto future education at University.”
