NEWQUAY’S BID ENSURES THE FUTURE OF THE ONLY EUROPEAN NIGHT SURF COMPETITION

The renowned Night Surf will return to Fistral Beach, Newquay on the 14th and 15th June 2013 thanks to an exciting new partnership between the UK Pro Surfing Tour (UKPST) and the Newquay Business Improvement District (BID)  The only event of its kind in Europe, the extremely popular Night Surf  attracts the best British surfers, many international competitors and a large supportive crowd for a two day competition under the special flood lights.  Live music, DJs and fireworks also light up the beach and if there is any surf event to put in your calendar, this is it.

Night Surf

The Night Surf started off 12 years ago at Lusty Glaze and recently moved to Fistral Beach where it was exclusively sponsored by Nike. Unfortunately this year Nike decided to pull all of its surfing commitments resulting in the Night Surf not having a vital sponsor. However determined not to be defeated by this loss of income and realising the importance of the event to the town and surfing community, the UKPST and Newquay BID have worked together to put on the event back on and ensure its future continuity.

Dave Reed, Director of the UK Pro Surf Tour said: “We would like to thank Newquay BID for coming forward with an invaluable offer to keep this popular event going.  The Night Surf is an integral part of the annual Newquay event calendar and the pro surfer’s programme. So many people want this event to happen and understand its role in Newquay and in surfing UK-wise.  Without the support of the BID the event would undoubtedly not have taken place this year and we are extremely grateful for this new backing and exciting future.   As result of the BID coming on board we also now have support from a number of local companies so the momentum is positively building.”

Eve Wooldridge, Newquay BID Manager, said: “Surfing is so important to the both businesses and residents of Newquay, especially the Night Surf.  This is the only night surfing competition in the UK and for the past eleven years has attracted visitors and tourists of all ‘ilks’ from across Cornwall and beyond. With the unfortunate global move of Nike, the BID agreed to partner the event to this key event to ensure its destiny. Working the UKPST the BID is providing the infrastructure whilst other sponsors are supporting the entertainment and surfing divisions. We’re all looking forward to seeing the result of this event being run more locally and to the surfing business community playing a key role this year and in the future.”

The Night Surf starts on Friday 14th June at 1pm where the first lot of surfers will take to the waves for the Open Division.  They will continue to battle it out through dusk and into the night until 11.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

For the spectators, as well as being able to see some of the top UK’s surfers doing their stuff under challenging conditions, there will be a firework display on the Saturday night at 10.45pm as part of the closing party. Throughout both evenings there will also be live music, DJs and beach activities for all ages.
