Russ Winter wins Saltburn Open

Russell Winter wins this year’s Saltburn Open at Saltburn Beach, Redcar. Newquay based former World Championship Tour surfer dominated the final with big powerful turns as he excelled in the clean two to four foot surf conditions.

Russell commented “It has been a fantastic event; I have enjoyed coming to Saltburn and competing in good waves. However the other competitors pushed me all the way especially Luis Eyre who I thought nearly had me, but I managed to get a good wave near the end of the heat. On behalf of all the competitors I would like to thank Redcar and Cleveland Council for supporting this event and look forward to coming back next year”.

This is the second time Russ has won this event and is the second event he has won on the UK Pro Surf Tour this year. But he still lies in third position in the UKPSA ranking narrowly behind Alan Stokes and Gordon Fontaine.

Finishing second was Luis Eyre from Manchester but now based in Portugal. Third place went to an inform French surfer Gordon Fontaine and fourth to Woolacombe surfer Stuart Campbell.

In the P20 Once a Day Sun Protection Pro Junior division Newquay Surfer and P20 Pro Junior rankings leader Luke Dillon took the title in doing so scored the highest individual wave score of the contest. Second place went to Bournemouth’s Miles Lee Hargreaves, third Croyde’s Taz Knight and fourth Liskeard’s Ed Smith

The Women’s title was taken out by one of the most dominant female surfers competing in the UK today Keshia Eyre. This is the third event she has entered this year and the third one she has won. Second place was Croydes (Taz sister) Peony Knight, third to Lucy Campbell and fourth 2011 Women’s Champion Hannah Harding.

In the Adams Surfboard U18 Boys division Taz Knight took the title showing he will be challenging for this title at the end of the year. Second went to Newquay’s Angus Scotney, third Miles Lee Hargreaves and fourth, one of the most up and coming welsh surfers Rhys Poulton

The Snugg Wetsuits U18 Girls was a repeat performance by Keshia Eyre who took the title with young Peony Knight not far behind in second followed by Lucy Campbell third.

The event was number 5 on the UK Pro Surf Tour, thousands of extreme sport enthusiasts and spectators from across area gathered at this year’s event. The good surf and great weather helped make it an event to remember. Many thanks must go to Redcar and Cleveland Council, Red Bull, P20 Sun Protection, Adams Surfboards and Snugg Wetsuits for making the event possible.

The tour now moves on to the Thurso Surf Festival October 26th 27th
