PRESS RELEASE / JUNE 2011

NIKE LIGHTS UP BRITISH SURFING WITH THE NIKE 6.0 NIGHT SURF 2011

London, UK Britain’s finest surfers are getting ready for the first 6-star Men’s Open to be held on our shores as part of the UK Pro Surf Tour. Nike 6.0 is looking to blow all other domestic events out of the water with its 2-year sponsorship of the Night Surf, taking place on 8th and 9th July in Cornwall.

Held on Newquay’s world-renowned Fistral Beach break, surfers across all disciplines will compete over two days and nights, in a bid to win a share of the lucrative £15,000 prize purse.

The 28 pre-qualified riders in the Men’s event will be joined by an additional 4 wild cards after Friday’s surf-off heats. The final 32 will then battle it out for a cut of the £8,000 fund in the Open division, the largest ever on the UK Pro Surf Tour. The event will also encompass Women’s Open, Longboard, Pro Junior, U-16 Boys, U-16 Girls and U-12 divisions.

While competitors battle it out in the water, spectators will have a great time on the beach where they can soak up the action first-hand or take it in on the large LCD screen. Various experiences will also be available on the action-packed coastline, including an energetic live performance from the hotly-tipped San Franciscan newcomer, Hanni El Khatib, whose track ‘I Got A Thing’ features on the Nike’s latest ‘Just Do It’ TV advert.

Although it’s a full-on weekend there is still time to host the UK leg of the Nike 6.0 ‘Cash for Tricks’ tour, a 5-stop European series that awards cash for the most innovative surfing. With a line-up of some of the most progressive riders from around Europe, the future of the sport will be on display with another £10,000 prize money on offer to those who really push the boundaries of what’s possible in UK water.
